Dear Invergordon Settler / Newcomer

A public meeting was held on August 17th to discuss ideas for the celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Closer Settlement at Invergordon, 50 years of the primary school at the present site, 50 years since the opening of the pioneer Memorial Church and 25 years since the capsule was buried-due to be opened in 2011.

The committee formed at that meeting endorsed a suggestion I made, which was to compile a history of Closer Settlement at Invergordon 1961-2010. The Invergordon Parks Ground committee has agreed to act as partner applicant to apply for a Local History Grant to fund printing of the book. I have offered to compile the history and some preliminary work has already been done.

The Book.

There will be an acknowledgement of the aboriginal communities of the area before the European settlement, and a history of Invergordon pre closer settlement days, but the main aim will be to record History of Closer Settlement at Invergordon until the present day.

Some people with special knowledge of the various clubs/organisations/schools that have played an important part in Invergordon History over the years have been contacted and asked to research and compile a history of that particular club/organisation. These reports will be included in the book. If there is anyone else whom would like to be involved in this way please contact Doug Brown Ph: (03) 58655207 or Rosemary Kennett Ph: (03) 58621707 as there are some guidelines we’d ask you to follow.

I am also hoping to have contributions for this social and anecdotal history from many of the original Closer Settlers and later newcomers to Invergordon in the following way – short recollections of various aspects of life, incidents, (humorous would be good) challenges, friendships, memorable events eg. Floods, droughts, bloat, footballclub balls etc. Almost anything that happened at Invergordon in the following eras. Early days (1960’s) Heydays (1970-1980’s) Changing times (1990’s) Challenging times (2000-2010).

I hope many will be keen to contribute. If you just start off, “I remember when”.... the rest will be history!

Also needed are photos of the above eras that can be borrowed, to make copies, either for the book or for a separate photographic display. These would be returned to you as soon as the copy is made.

Photographic Display

The Invergordon Grounds Committee have discussed the possibility and agree to the use of the vacant hall (Guide Hall) to house permanent photographic history of the area, from pre cloer settlement years through the 1961-1966 block allocation years, until present time and into the future. They would like to borrow any photos depicting any aspects of Invergordon’s History. Copies would be made and originals returned . Please ensure names and addresses are sent with the photos.

For further information or if you have any suggestions please contact Rosemary  Ph: (03) 58621707 or Doug Brown, Email dcjmbrown@hotmail.com

A Website is been setup to provide information about Invergordon and celerbration events. Log on fo updates – www.invergordon.org

Please send all stories for the “I Remember when “ section by March 31st 2010. We hope to have the book available by 50th Anniversary Celerbrations in 2011 (date to be announced)

PS: Should the application for the grant to fund printing of the book be unsuccessful, would you be willing to contribute to the cost of printing?. Also if you could indicate approximately how many copies of the book you and your family may like, it would be helpful. (We want to print enough copies but not hundred more than is required) Every effort will be made to keep the cost of the book as low as possible

Regards

Rosemary Kennett
